Last Sunday saw me heading west with the hope of putting a good bend in my dad’s rod. Whilst we waited for the tide we hit the river for some LRF. I was using the new Graphiteleader Finezza Nouvo 76-842UL-T-AL. Now I have this rod a couple of weeks and I find it hard to fault. I was so impressed with the Corto ex I wondered if it was possible to make a rod much better but somehow they’ve done it. Not only does this rod feel more responsive it also feels lighter in the hand. We all had a number of fish with corkwings making up the majority of my catch.
With a south easterly wind the wrasse marks we hoped to hit were blown out but as they were close we decided to have a few casts. The old man setup and first cast, BANG! Fish on, the rod was well bent and within seconds this wrasse had run him to ground (my fault for failing to mention tightening the drag up). With persevered with the wind and had a few more casts to no avail. we left the mark with my dad cursing and swearing blind he had just lost a wrasse of at least 6lb. Mother always said he likes to exaggerate.
From the wrasse spot we headed up river in search of those shiny bars. I’m not going to get bogged down in this blog on my recent lack of bass. Maybe it’s bad luck, poor conditions or my apparent lack of technical ability but they are doing a very good job of evading me.
We worked the shallows with some top water lures and with no sign of fish, half an hour past and we had covered a few hundred yards of the river. I decided to switch to a Dexters Wedge again with no joy. My dad had decided to stick with the top waters and what a decision that was. A few moments later I heard an almighty splash and you’ve guessed it, my dad had struck gold or silver in this case. After an erratic fight in the shallow water he soon had a PB bass on the shore weighing in at 4lb.
Not the best photo but rushing to get the fish back safely.
We worked some lures over some more of the river before calling it a night, dad’s bass being the only one caught on this trip. I now had the long car journey home listening to him me telling the story of the one that got away and his surface caught bass, not sure how many times he asked me “did you see it take?” Really happy to see him catch this one. Dad is new to lure fishing this year and bassing the last few weeks, he’s off to a flying start.
