Saturday night saw Matt Jones and me meeting up for a ‘quiet’ drink. Soon after my wife Tanya joined us and not before long we were in a taxi heading for the most prestigious club in town. After a 4 minute journey we arrived at the aptly named Random Arms. The place was littered with ghost, pirates, wolves, penguins oh and a cow.
A few glasses of Millbrook’s finest champagne (Thatcher’s Gold) later and the verbal diarrhoea had started. It was at this point something was said that rang true. “It’s not all about the fishing.” I instantly agreed with this and the more I thought about it the more I agreed.
The beginning of this year saw me make a big jump in my fishing which led me into lure fishing in general. With this jump came new faces and I’m pleased to say new friends. As fun as I have found the fishing, and the fun is the most important thing, the banter and laughs shared on the shore have far outweighed the fishing. There really are some top blokes in the circles I’ve fell into and I’m still meeting new faces who are like minded and equally funny.
I couldn’t give a better example of what I’m talking about then our trip to Benodet for Trophee Rock Fish Ecogear by NSF. With the competition stretch out of bounds to anyone entering the competition, it left very little ground to fish within walking distance. Luke Fox and I checked out some awesome looking bass ground but unfortunately neither of us managed to pull a fish out. We headed back and met up with the guys at a local pizzeria. As we arrived the banter and beer was already in full swing. It didn’t take Luke and me long to catch up.
This was the first time I had met Clint Elliott but he made me feel very welcome with his strokes and digs and constant ribbing. Now Clint is a perfect example of what I mentioned before, a like-minded chap who enjoys his fishing but seems to enjoy the banter more, especially with his favourite sparring partner Luke. Danny and Andrew were on top form and the one liners kept flowing along with the mass of lager they consumed. Even Ben was welcoming dispite the Lure Heaven hoody ;)
Now the fishing in Benodet was just that ‘fishing in Benodet’. The atmosphere was good amongst the 80 contestants and the level of talent seemed very high, most of which coming from guys and girls a lot younger than myself. All that said the most memorable part of the trip was the food, drink and banter. The fishing just seemed to fade into the back ground and become unimportant.
“It’s not all about the fishing” is going to stick with me for a while and I’m sure it will get some of you thinking. Now I’m sure for some the fishing is what it’s all about but I have come to realise it’s far more than that.
