My day started at 4:30am but how could I do anything but wake up with a smile on my face, I’m off fishing. Before I could get too excited I still had to pick Ben up and then drive 3 hours to the mark.
The mark is a short stretch of river in Chippenham shown to us by Matt Jones. I was eager to fish this river after reading Matt’s blog here.
The run up was pretty standard with the usual stop off at McDonalds for breakfast and the all-important coffee. Once we arrived the usual buzz of excitement came over me. I simply love fishing new venues and this was no exception. This place was a far cry with its graffiti backdrop and urban surroundings from my usual fishing from the shore in Cornwall.
The weapons of choice for the day for us both were the Major Craft Crostage Solid Tip 0.5-5g teamed up with Daiwa Gekkabijin 2004 and some of the brilliant Sunline Rock Fish 0.4PE.
First fish of the day went to Ben and was a nice little perch only small but a welcome fish. A quick move downstream and it was my turn for a fish. I nice chub of over a pound and my first lure caught chub.
I also managed a PB brown trout. It wasn’t huge but only ever fished for them once before and didn’t land one over 6in.
The day continued with us both catching our fair share of perch but I took poll with a new PB (previous PB 12oz). She fell to a 2.5in Tict Brilliant in red on a 1.8g Shirasu Fine Head. Ben hooked into a nice perch that was clearly bigger than mine but unfortunately it spat the hook and left Ben cursing.
The weather was absolutely blistering and with the sun high it was time to find shade, fluid and food. A quick trip to Waitrose and a sandwich and drink later we were ready to fish again.
We started with a quick look at the weir. Ben switched his lure to a 3in Bugant Aqua and within a cast or two he was into a fish. Now from the off it was evident that this was a big fish and with the weir opening and flow increasing Ben had a fight on his hands. What seemed like a life time later and some hairy moments I managed to net the fish that Ben played beautifully bagging himself a very nice pike tipping 9lb on the scales. A new lure caught PB for Ben.
We then continued downstream and we both had a couple more chub and lots more perch. Ben also bagged himself another pike this one not as exciting at a couple of pound but still gave him a good run around on the light gear. We explored the lower sections of the river before making our way back up to the weir to meet Matt who was joining us after work and itching to get out.
Matt landed a few perch in the short session but unable to locate the chub. Ben however managed one more chub probably just under a pound and I managed two half decent perch to end the session. All in all a cracking day and I will definitely be gracing the bank again in the future.
Just want to say a massive thank you to Matt Jones for introducing us to the river and the top tips he provided.
