Lure fishing versus bait fishing.
Firstly I’ll apologise for the lack of photos.
I have no doubt in my mind that bait fishing will throw up new records and bigger fish for those dedicated and skilled enough to catch the monsters of the deep. I have bait fished and I will again but for me you cannot beat lure fishing.
The techniques and tactics employed in order to catch fish and species not usually targeted by lure are awesome. I would not be surprised if records were caught on a lure but those using the tactics necessary would usually return the fish to fight another day. I feel that the methods in which records are confirmed need to be address and catch and realise should be encouraged.
Don’t get me wrong, I see no harm in catching fish to kill, cook and eat but fish killed simply to claim a record in my opinion isn’t right. There are many different species that simple are not eaten at a British dining table. To kill these magnificent fish simply to claim a record is wrong.
I know friends of mine have caught fish thought to be records and simple returned them without a second thought. I would like to think that the majority of fishermen have that level of respect for the fish they pursue to return them no matter the size.
Anyway I digress, Lure versus bait?
For me it isn’t the techniques employed but my role as the “fisherman” in which to catch them. I much prefer to keep moving and cover water working my lure to catch my fish, for me this method suits me perfectly. Maybe it’s my lack of patients, I just do not like sitting behind a rod waiting for something to happen. I much prefer working a lure and making it happen.
Bait definitely has its place and until people work out how best to fish for certain species by lure I will continue to use bait. However I do not feel it will be long until all species are targeted by lure. Maybe not as successful as bait but possible. There are a lot of scented lures that in my opinion are hybrids of bait and lure. If you dead stick one of these smelly lures are you lure fishing or bait fishing?
In the last two weeks alone I have caught 18 different species although many of these are common to fall to a lure, some of which until not long ago I believed difficult or unlikely to fall victim to a piece of plastic. There are still many avenues to explore in lure fishing and I am eager and excited to do so.
I know there are people that will read this and feel that bait is the only way. I also know there are people that will agree with me, there may even be people that think bait is a waste of time. I’m not trying to convince people that lure is better than bait or bait is better than lure, I just simply prefer lure fishing on a personal level. I know people will prefer bait fishing and the relaxed method of sitting behind rods will suit them better.
As always I am keen to hear other people’s views, from both lure and bait fisherman. What is it about either that you love or hate.
