With the Lure Heaven UK species hunt done and dusted and all photo’s submitted, the only thing left to do is sit back and wait for the results to be announced on Monday.
Now for me this really was a case of the taking part being the most important thing. I can honestly say I don’t mind where I have finished, well, of course it would be nice to win. What this hunt has done for me is push me to try new techniques, fish for new species and try new marks. I have met new people along the way, found some great new spots and learnt lots.
Ok yes, some species were more luck than skill. For example the thick lipped mullet. I had just scaled down to a size 18 hook with a small 0.6g split shot and about 10mm of Power Isome. I was hoping for a sand goby to tick off the list. I very slowly twitch it across the bottom with plenty of long pauses, then BOOM, fish on. After an awesome fight I landed a nice mullet of about 2.5lb.
Other specific species were targeted. Probably the best example of that was fishing for black bream. I chose a drop shot rig but instead of directly looping the hook onto the leader I tied it to a short snood to increase movement then waited for the bream to hook it’s self. After not too long it paid off and I had landed my first ever sea bream.
I also spent some time fishing the fresh stuff. Although the lakes didn’t do it for me getting on the rivers and canals was awesome. We have some amazing waterways here in the UK and most of which are simply beautiful. Check out this video by Luke Fox, I know some of you would have seen it already but it helps to illustrate the beauty.
I also had a number of firsts during the hunt from new lure caught species to new species all together. I caught my first ever turbot fishing in the surf with a small 7g jig, the bream was a new one. I also caught my first lure caught gurnard and the mullet was a first on a lure. Now this has got me thinking and if I can catch the best part of 40 species in 3 months, how many can I catch next year. I have heard rumours of a guy who is on over 100 species this year. Now that is remarkable and a bloody good effort. I'll do my best to keep a record and we'll see next year.
Here are my entries into the species hunt and others can be seen here on Lure Heavens UK Facebook page
