It's that time of year again and quite frankly it's come around quick. I am of course talking about the Tackle and Guns show at Stoneleigh. After attending last year I was keen to get back and catch up with some familiar faces and some new ones. After making the effort to travel up the night before it would be rude not to have a cheeky fish before the show.
5:30am and I get woken up by Matt. I rise slowly with a banging head and feeling a little worse for wear, obviously completely unrelated to the previous evenings cider. Matt took one look at me and offered to drive, thankfully. After a short drive we arrived at the canal. I had one goal and that was to land a zander or two. Living in Cornwall I have to take all the opportunities I can to catch zander.
It was a cold start to the day and I really could have done with my woolly hat and gloves at one point. To cut a long story short the first half hour didn't even see a take but I got my first sign of a fish whilst vertical jigging along the edge of the canal. This take spurred me on and it wasn't long until I had another take in the same area. Things were looking promising and my senses were heightened, I was like a coiled spring ready to strike and firmly set that hook. Thankfully I didn't have to wait long. I burst into action with a solid strike but almost instantly I was convinced I had a perch from the fight. You can only imagine my delight when I saw it was a zander. Not big by anyone standards but nonetheless a new personal best at 1lb 6oz.
Time had caught up with us pretty quick and we had to shoot off to the show. I was happy though. Two zander on the bank and a new PB.
I'll be sure to write up my thoughts on the show as soon as I can but I can honestly say I had a great time and it was nice to catch up with everyone.
