So the weather has calmed a little but the sea still resembles hot chocolate and if I'm to believe the satellite images I have seen, that hot chocolate extends as much as 30 miles! Reports from boat owners in the area are just as bad on the few occasions they have managed to get out. As a result the little fishing I have managed has all been on the fresh stuff.
Today was no different. I must admit I nearly didn't bother with the strength of the wind but I'm glad I did. I basically had four or so hours to have a bash and perch was the quarry. With the ever faithful Bosco in hand I made my way to the lake. Things didn't look promising to start with, a little more colour in the water than I would like so I hooked on a nice bright white GYCB swimbait. I worked the lure close to the bottom and nice and slow, I soon got a take and then another. Things were looking up and even more so as the Bosco bent into a decent fish.
2lb 4oz of beautiful stripes. This seem to set a theme as Ben was next to catch with another 2lb 4oz fish, the same fish? No, but we weren't sure until we had checked the pictures.
The day continued well for me with a further 3 perch caught on a dropshot rig with a panic minnow. Another 2lb'r at 2lb 8oz, a 1lb 14oz and 1lb 8oz. Ben on the other hand didn't manage to find another fish. I would normally feel for him, a little at least but after his 12lb 10oz pike last week, quite frankly I don't.
Today was a good day...
So the perch fishing was great fun today and some other personal issues have been resolved, things were going well. I then got an email which topped it all. I have a place at the Chew Valley qualifying round of the British Lure Angling Championship. To say I am excited would be an understatement.
For those of you who aren't aware Chew Valley is home to some nice pike, some very nice pike.
I'm hoping I might get my first 20lb'r but I suppose I secretly hoping for a thirty. Time to start shopping for gear ready for the event. You never know if I do well I might get a chance to fish it again in the final. There are still spaces left for some of the qualifiers so why not get involved and you never know you might just end up catching the fish above. Check out all the details here.
