Zandermania 2014 was last Saturday and we headed up for a rascal trip to see what we could do. With a quick stop for an Irish breakfast and plenty of giggles we soon arrived in Gloucester. The weather was much better than forecast and those that were brave enough to risk the weather were graced with blazing sunshine, even if a little windy.
For Danny and I the competition didn't go to well, in fact not well at all with us both scoring a big fat blank. Simon and Ben however managed their first ever zander and considering the conditions it was good going, with only 6 anglers managing to catch. Ben secured 6th place with this 24cm monster. Simon managed a better fish at 39cm which put him in 4th.
All in all it was a great event, despite my blank. My partner for the day was Andy Mytton who was great company and a font of knowledge on zander fishing. I hope we get to fish again sometime soon Andy. After Zandermania we thought it would be rude not to hit up the rivers. So after driving all round the houses to McDonalds we shot a little further up country in search of some pike.
With lots of weed and lilies present and a good chance of a lump of a fish I opted for my big stick. The big stick that still hasn't found it's way back to Lure Heaven UK HQ. The trusty Graphiteleader Nuovo Bosco 1/2-3oz teamed up with the industry standard Shimano Curado. Danny had promised us some pretty special fishing and I'm pleased to say he didn't disappoint. The first spot was a rather sexy looking weir with plenty of lilies. I went for a top water frog and first cast got hit twice, in fact I think we all got hit or hooked up on our first casts. With the warm dry weather we've been having we decided to stick to the weirs and it proved a good strategy. It wasn't long before we had all landed fish but Simon trumping us all with a new PB just one ounce short of 10lb.
So chuffed for Simon hitting two PB's in a day. We continued getting smashed by pike and with a move to another weir we finally saw a double. Unfortunately not caught by me but Danny.
Ben and I both managed a few fish but no doubles. Man there is some serious water up there and I can't wait to get back up. This trip is what fishing should be all about, good friends, masses of laughs and a few fish for good measure.
